About
The Quarry Haus
The
Quarry Haus is the original Evans house built by
John Evans in 1903. Evans was the Quarrymaster
for the Idaho Lime Plant established in Evans,
Washington in 1902. It was sold in the 1930's to
the U.S. Gypsum Company. The year round
industry employed from 70 to 100 men who mined
and processed lime which was used in the
manufacture of plaster, plutonium and
anti-freeze.
The Evans house with it's "maid's cottage,"
two-car garage, grape arbor and fruit trees was
purchased by Ricke and Mary Swaim in 1993. The
original house has additions and extensive
remodeling and now serves as a vacation rental
and recreational retreat for
skiers/snowboarders, wild turkey and deer
hunters, family reunions, high school reunion
guests and more.
This unique guest house reflects the interests
of Ricke and Mary in the decor and bedrooms.
The
Alaska room reflects
Ricke's interest in the Iditarod and Mary's
Alaska heritage, the
Cowboy/Western
room reflects Ricke's years of riding in rodeos
and breaking horses and the
Ski Den upstairs features a ski theme.
Ricke
and Mary have skied every ski area in five
states and two Canadian provinces and both have
been weekend ski instructors for many years
while teaching in local public schools. The
"maid's cottage" is now "the Fisherman's Shack"
and comes with an Old Towne canoe with a motor.
